Why a hospital is different

A hospital cannot be shut down for a fire system installation. Wards, operating theatres, laboratories and the kitchen all remain in use throughout, and each area carries a different risk profile and a different suppression requirement. The work was therefore phased floor by floor, with testing and commissioning scheduled around clinical operations and signed off area by area.

Fire detection — multi-brand integration

  • Simplex 4100ES 10-loop addressable panel serving basement to fourth floor
  • Approximately 1,200 photoelectric smoke detectors and 135 heat detectors, with 75 manual call points, sounder/strobes, and I/O and isolator modules
  • A second Ziton panel covering fifth floor to roof, integrated to the same head-end

Running two different manufacturers’ panels as one monitored system is the technically demanding part of this project, and it is what allowed the upper floors to be brought on without replacing the existing head-end.

Suppression — matched to the risk

  • HFC-227ea (FM-200) clean agent, 25 bar, protecting two generator and substation control rooms — suppresses without damaging live electrical plant
  • Wet-chemical kitchen suppression with linear heat detection over the cooking line
  • Independent backup detection on the suppression panels

Fire protection

  • Standpipe and sprinkler network throughout
  • UL/FM engine-driven fire pump, 1000 USGPM at 120 m, with jockey pump and dedicated controllers, commissioned by the manufacturer
  • Fire valves, exit lights and signage, extinguishers and fire stretchers

A relationship, not a handover

The main installation completed in March 2023, with gas suppression commissioned in May 2022 and detection progressively certified through to 2025. RADS has continued to serve the site since — sprinkler modifications, pump line rework, valve and filter replacement, detection extensions, and exit signage — under a service and spares relationship running through 2025.

That continuity is the point. A life-safety system is only as good as its maintenance, and we remain accountable for the systems we install.
